Transmission issues

I have a 1981 silverton 31 C last yr I had my boat guy did the clutch plates on the starboard motor tranny for some reason when we were taking out in the water last fall the port tranny had a issue. Last yr that side was good I have 2 reverse and only starboard forward could it be in the shifter

maybe....check the shift lever position in F - N - R and see if the detent ball aligns with the holes in the lever.

Do I have to take apart the shifter

no, the shift lever on the gear...behind the engine...
