Transmission Dipsticks

Dear Crusader Colleaugues,

We have a set of super old Crusaders in our '78 Egg. On the starboard side, the transmission dipstick coroded and needs replacement. The parts store gave us 2 different sizes and neither work. Correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't a properly fitting dipstick screw into the recepticle all the way and tighten? Any advice on finding the right dipstick?

Warmly, Alan

Transmission Dipsticks ??

Initially I thought the question was gonna be about rude people who don't know how to use a cellphone while amongst other beings.:D

My Crusaders are 1991 and the transmission dipsticks don't screw in, they just friction twist into the port..that's all.

They don't screw in and tighten, not like a threaded bolt going into a hole.

If the "plug" part(near the end of the handle) of your new dip stick enters the hole and the cap bottoms on the top of the hole, with a friction fit, that should be OK. Mine do just a slight twist after plunging the DS in.

Mine looks similar to this..

Hope that helps.

Find the make/model/serial# info on your gears. Share it with us and your parts vendor. The key dimension on any dipstick is from the bottom of the it's cap to the FULL line.

It's highly likely you have borg warner (velvet drive) gears but not guaranteed. As Don noted above, they are retained with a friction fit. The friction can be increased by CW (from above) rotation of the T handle, which compresses the rubber "stopper" on the dipstick. (Never overtighten these, the stopper will distort, and then leak, etc...)

My parts manual shows several different part nos, depending on age and if the unit is direct (1:1) or has a reduction attached.
Hale Marine can answer your question, and provide the part.

Actually, my older BW Velvet Drive Series 72Cs have screw-in dip sticks. Stick your pinky in the hole and see if the interior is threaded or not.

Alan, need information on the trannys: mfg and model.

Gene
