I posted in the gear, tranny section but didn't seem to get any responses. This section is ALWAYS good about answers so I hope nobody cares if I throw this out on this section.

I have borg warners on my 454 Crusaders....

I am experiencing some spin on one gear when in neutral.... 2 concerns 1st is this likely is a teardown to repair??

2nd question is when winterizing... how long before you could damage the cutlass bearing out of the water with a shaft turning slowly?? I keep water on it but sure is a PITA...

ANY help is appreciated!!!

Just curious....why is the shaft turning when winterizing?

When winterizing I flood my engine and all associated parts with the engine in neutral.

Re spinning in neutral.... disconnect the linkage at the tranny and move the linkage by hand to make sure you are in actual "neutral"....also check tranny fluid level as well.

If the prop is turning in neutral, you may have warped clutch plates or steels. If you can stop it from turning by putting a little resistance on the coupler, say with your shoe, it probably isn't anything to worry about. If however it's really spinning, then that unit needs to be checked out. As for how long the bearing will hold up, it really depends on how fast it's turning. If it's just gently turning, it won't build up too much heat but if it's really spinning, then you'll start to see smoke and hear it squealing in short order. I've sprayed mine down with silicone spray. If you're going to run the engine out of water for an extended time, you could always unbolt the coupler and separate the two.

The shaft is turning while in neutral... obviously it should not be but there is some creeping. So when I'm winterizing her, I run her on land, and while on land the shaft is turning even though it's in neutral... I have no problem in the water as it barely affects movement of the boat BUT concerned it turns enough OUT OF THE water to build up heat on the cutlass bearing while running anti-freeze into her and fogging her.

You could shoot some lubricating oil in there. Better yet, use dish detergent (it doesn't effect rubber like oil does).

all good ideas.... I'm thinking just unbolting at the coupler would be easiest and least worrisome. The dish detergent idea is something I had not thought of either!!!
