1976 140HP 4 cyl inboard-outboard no reverse an grind into forward but still goes in. fliud where?
 
Several things can be involved

Several things can be involved here --
Shift cable needs adjustment.
Shift cable needs replaced.
Shift shaft not aligned properly with lower unit at connection.
Shift electrical interupt switch needs adjustment or replacement.

"the fluid goes in the oil vent plug in the top of the out drive.. Your actually supposed to put it in from the drain plug on the bottom but I put it in from the vent hole so I don't spill any . I fill it until it comes out the top just like a differential on a truck....Then I start it up and put it in gear on the muffs. don't rev it though just let it go into gear at the lowest rpm possible for about 45 sec to a min... then shut it down and check it again to be sure there is no leaks or air in the foot...if it doesn't come out when you check it the second time add a little more..

I hate to rain on the parade, but the main reason you should fill from the bottom is to displace air pockets upwards and out. Otherwise there is no way you can be sure how much air is still in there. The passage from the top to the bottom is very narrow, and fuid cannot descend while trapped air is trying to rise.

Do yourself a big favor and get a 12 dollar lube oil plunger pump and put it in from the bottom like you're supposed to. The mess is minimal. All it takes is a minute or two under load with no oil and your upper gears will turn into mush. A very expensive lesson.

I replaced my old one that quit w/a new Merc. brand. Three pumps and the tube came off at the pump and oil went all over. Put a zip tie on it and it popped off again. Put a steel hose clamp on it to fix it. Then, you guessed it, the plastic fill nipple at the OD drain popped out of the threads; oil all over. Replaced the nipple w/the steel one and steel clamp from the old pump. What a mess!!!

I have one of the older pumps with a metal fitting that screws into the housing. Only trouble is, the plastic hose has become very stiff with age (unlike some other things), and it takes some doing to connect it up. But patience is a virtue with anything related to boating I guess. I keep telling myself that.....

It's sad that you can't hardly buy anything these days that works correctly the first time.
