My just-acquired '96 Johnson 9.9hp outboard does not put out water from the upper p-hole and I am leery of running it.
Do I need a new water pump?

Running in the water or in a trash can with the water a couple inches above the joint where the lower unit bolts up to the long exhaust housing (water pump area), poke a single strand wire up the water telltale fitting to clean it out. They do get clogged from time to time. Let us know what you find.

The wee hole in the fitting often plugs up------------remove it from the block and blow the hose out.--------------If you have just bought this motor, and you do not know the age of the impeller then it is almost a must to install a new one.-----------------Your motor likely does not have a system that will shut the motor off in case of overheat.---------------If the impeller fails you will like cause major damage.--------------Install a new impeller every 3 years or so.

Thanks, joereeves, I think I probably need a new impeller and will let you know if that does the job.
