"Let me explain. I bought a 93 boat with a Joh 90 HP, the lake where the boat is destined has a 50 HP limit. I am looking to trade my 90 for a 50. My question is this. Is there a particular year 50 HP between 93 to present that has the best power range or lends itself to power upgrades and what might I get out of a 50 with some modifications?"

Take the hood to a body shop a

Take the hood to a body shop and have it re-painted. You can get 50 HP decals on Ebay. Good luck!

"You are never going to make a

"You are never going to make a 50 run anywhere near what you would get out of a 90, no matter what you do.

Either, find another lake, or suck it up and run the 50 - the restriction is there for a reason.

You may be able to turn a 50 into a 60, but would be cost prohibitive in most cases and really wouldn't give any better performance....

It would however be illegal on two fronts - you would be exceeding the horsepower of the lake and you would be violating EPA laws which prevent you from boosting the horsepower above what the motor was built as...."

"I wasnt looking to make a 50

"I wasnt looking to make a 50 perform like a 90, rather, Since I have to go to a 50, I want advice on what year or model should I look for. Is there a particular year that stands out as the best, is there a year or model to stay clear of?"

"Scott, if you are looking for

"Scott, if you are looking for a 50 that is durable and somewhat trouble free, maybe keep an eye out for a "48 special".

They were built for a number of years as a "no frills" 50 horse (was also a 28 and 88 special as well).

Excellent engines and you can look extensively through the postings here and see them talked about very few times.

That tells me at least, that they don't break too often...."

"Scott, if you are looking for

"Scott, if you are looking for the breakdown, it's:

J - Johnson
50 - horsepower
P - power trim/tilt
L - long shaft
SR - 2004
S - model run suffix"
