Can someone tell me what the 6

Can someone tell me what the 6 bolts connecting the powerhead to the lower unit are torqued to.

"tight,w/out overtightening,..

"tight,w/out overtightening,...use sealer on threads....
....interesting project---pwrhd,conn to lower unit.. :>)
what engine?"

"Jamie most outboards have a powerhead at the top a trunk housing or mid section in the middle and a lower unit at the bottom, if your tightening the powerhead bolts to the trunk housing as JB states tight,w/out overtightening,...use sealer on threads you may be the next guy pulling it apart one day"

"Thanks Jamie, I think I might

"Thanks Jamie, I think I might of F'd my motor anyways.. I want to just crawl up into a ball and cry. When I turn my flywheel there is very little compression and there's a grinding noise coming from the lower unit now. I didn't even touch the lower unit. Someone please tell me I didn't f my motor."

"Drain the gearbox oil and have a look, if its damaged you will see chunks of metal, spin the prop shaft and see if its picking up a gear in neutral as the cable might be out of adjustment.

Do a compression test...only takes a minute and then see if there is a problem

I haven't started the moto

I haven't started the motor and there wasn't any grinding noise untill I took the powerhead off and put it back on. I'm thinking I didn't tighten the sparkplugs enough and maybe because I didn't oil the cylinders after cleaning them?????? Would this cause low compression?

Should I start it when there&#

Should I start it when there's a grinding noise when it's in neutral? Won't I do more damage?

Shift the gear lever half way

Shift the gear lever half way into rev and turn the flywheel by hand and see if the grinding noise goes away then try it half way towards forward gear and see if the noise goes that will tell you is the gear cable is outof adjustment

"Jamie, I don't have my co

"Jamie, I don't have my controls connected. By shifting half way do you mean just before it goes into gear? Does the water impellor have any gears or is it run stright of the shaft? It almost sounds like plastic gears not meshing. I'm going to take the lower unit off and have a look anyways. I'll keep you posted."

I tried shifting in all positions and the noise doesn't go away. I don't understand why it's doing this. It didn't make this noise prior to me taking the powerhead off. Does 228 inch/pounds sound right for headbolts?

I know it wouldn't have an

I know it wouldn't have anything to do with headbolts. I just wanted to know if my manual was correct. You wouldn't believe what the noise was. I took my lower unit off and turned the flywheel...nothing...turned the shaft and BINGO! The water impeller was dried out and that's what the noise was...lol It actually sounded like gears were grinding. Everything is back together and hopefully taking her out tomorrow. Thanks again guys.

"ur impeller,is not causing,a grinding noise...seems like i am the grim reeper on this post!...u heard this noise,w/eng running,w/wtr ,..to it?,..or,...are u hearing the noise,w/eng OFF,..turning flywheel?"

"and to help u w/torque figure

"and to help u w/torque figures.....there is actually,....a torque spec,..for every single bolt,...on every single engine...
in outboards case,...in my opinion,...there r 4..
flywheel nut--
head bolts...
rod bolts--
pinion nut-
unless i missed some...those r my 4 MUST BE torqued.....all the rest, need to be ....tight.
torque= w/a torque wrench"

"In agreement with JWB. I also

"In agreement with JWB. I also made a habit of torquing the main crankcase half bolts (large bolts holding the crankcase together), but other than that..... tight does it."
