"I have a 1971 800. Should the rotor be pointing at, or just before #1 on distributor cap when engine is at TDC? I replaced my distributor because of unrepairable broken wires, and I installed the return spring wrong. The engine ran, but after} I removed the distributor to fix the spring, I cannot get it to start. It sound like it's out of time."

"Bob,

With the throttle at idle, the rotor should point at the #1 electrode. Check the timing with a light. You should be able to adjust it from there.

"Thanks Tony,

My problem is I can't get the engine to start. I am fairly sure I put the flywheel on correctly but I don't know how to confirm. It sounds like it wants to backfire so I think my timing is not close enough to let it start. I can find TDC, but how do I know rotor position is correct? All cylinders fire, and have good compression."
