Top crank seal removal

I am about to undertake the removal of a top crank seal on a 1950's 35 hp OMC outboard. Seal is clearly shot. Would anyone care to share their experience on how to do this successfully the first time. I sure don't want to wind up with a ruined seal, stuck there, with nothing left to grab onto. That would lead to splitting the motor, and I'd really prefer not to.

My plan at the moment is to drill a few small holes into the seal and then thread a self tapping screw into hole and pull. This has worked well for me with some lower unit seals.

Any comments or guidance would very much appreciated.

Thanks all.
