" Thanks for getting back to m

" Thanks for getting back to me on the compression question. One more question. I've seen where guys have had a problem with one cylinder and bored that one out with oversized piston but left the other cylinders as is. Is this acceptable or would this create a problem later on? My local mechanic & machine shop say don't do it. Thanks again, Marty. "

" Marty.... I have no idea why

" Marty.... I have no idea why they would say that other than doing so cuts down their profit margin.

The one oversized piston will not cause a balance problem, nor will it result in a compression difference. If only one piston and cylinder wall is scored, it would be financially foolish to bore the other three, five, or seven cylinders depending on whether the engine is a V/4, V/6, V/8, or for that matter simply a two (2) cylinder model.

The cost of boring those cylinders, plus the cost of new oversize pistons, etc, would add a hefty amount to the total bill.

When there is absolutely nothing wrong with the pistons and cylinders other then the pistons would require cleaning and new rings installed, the proper route to take is crystal clear, deglaze the cylinder walls, then clean and resuse the original pistons.

" Marty,

Joe is right about

" Marty,

Joe is right about this. Many people think that an oversize piston will cause an imbalance because of the increased volume of the cylinder, but if you take the time to do the mathematics, you will find that the difference is miniscule.
