Hi everyone.... I'm new to this forum. I just recently bought a 15 ft center console flats boat that has a 40 hp Tohatsu that's runs awesome. Has a little chug to it at idle but runs like a champ. It worrys me though because all of the outboards I have owned in the past have telltales on them, but this one doesn't. Is this normal? Btw it is a 1996. This is my first Tohatsu motor. Are these good reliable motors?

The 40C may have a "spray" at the back, not a traditional telltale tube. Check your Factory service manual for details. Are you overheating?

Nope no overheating at all..... I ran it yesterday in the water for 30 min and it ran awesome.... It has a slight chug to it though at idle. Is this normal?

Right. Those are the spray I was talking about. As for idle, if you make sure to verify link and sync (timing and throttle arm settings), have the idle stop set correctly, have new plugs, and impeccably clean carbs, the c model should have a nice idle. Sometimes the idle mixture screws are set a little too rich by someone who doesn't really understand them.

So these are good reliable motors?

The best. More robust than the 40D. Not as clean as the 40 TLDI, but overall very good. Excellent throttle response.
