Tohatsu M30A4 does not start occasionally

Hello all,

I have a 16 foot with a M30A4 30 hp Tohatsu tiller outboard that, sporadically, won't start.

The first time I took my boat out this season it started fine and ran great. But I forgot to shift it back to neutral before I stopped the engine and I heard a loud noise. I shifted it back to neutral and it wouldn't start. Fortunately I have a electrical trolling motor and that helped me getting back to the ramp. I got home after about 45 minutes and the outboard started right up with no problem.

The second time I took it out I remembered to shift it back to neutral and let it idle for 10 to 15 seconds before I stopped it; and it would start fine afterwards. After about 4 to 5 cycles of these stop and start the outboard acted up again and wouldn't start. Finally, I was able to start it when I gave it some gas/throttle as soon as I pulled the starting cord.

I want added that it idles just fine.

What would be the problem?

Thank you in advance,
Sam
