tohatsu 3.5hp starting problem

Recently bought this outboard second hand. Tried starting it and it ran for a short time, then just stopped and would not start.

Fitted a brand new spark plug but still nothing.

checked fuel was getting to the carb ok.

when removing the plug there are signs of fuel on it but no signs of sparking.

Pulled the chord with the plug held onto the outer casing but could see no sparking.

Linked out the dead mans switch but still no sparking.

What is your actual model? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? The stop switch, if connected, kills ignition, so if you jumpered it, you will never get spark.

The outboard is a 2002 2 stroke M3.5B2 tohatsu.

I tried disconnecting the switch end from the outboard casing, still seems to be no sparking when trying to start.

Whip out your Factory service manual, and diagnose the issue. You will need a good analog (not digital) ohm meter. Take readings of the exciter coil, CD unit, ignition coil, and stop switch.

Hi there,

sorry to to dig up an old thread but this is exactly the problem I'm having. I have purchased a ohm meter and would like a bit of guidance on how to take readings from the excited coil, cd unit and stop switch, what should the readings be etc?

thank you for your help

We need your exact model.
If you don't understand the stop switch operation, you will want a helper who knows more about small motors.
