Tohassu 5hp

Hi guys.

can some one answer this question I have a 2.9m rib with a brand new 4 stroke Tohassu 5hp outboard engine.

i am trying to understand were the tilt/trim pin needs to be there are 6 settings I had it on the second hole closeted to the transom and the front end was lifting but the rib seamed to be very sluggish in the water I. Must admit I was sat at the rear and I am 20 stone I was told the engine would plane have I got the pin in the wrong hole or do I need to sit at the bow of the boat with an extension on the outboard control.

thanks

Paul

Firstly, you are probably way under-powered. You likely need 2x that power... like the 9.8 hp model.
That motor can be increased to 6 hp by changing carbs.
What is the horsepower rating of the boat?
Yes, sitting forward will help.
Adjusting trim is always trial-and-error. No one can tell you the setting without testing. Same goes for transom height.

would 6Hp make much difference the engine and rib are brand new I have been out in it with the guy I bought it from its the EXCEL 290 model he told me it was quite quick to get on the plane but I seamed to have problems like I said not sure if moving the pin on the engine has anything to do with it Paul I have looked on YouTube at ribs with 5hp engines on them and they look quite fast on the water.
or is it just because I'm 20 stone lol could you have a look Paul on line I'm really lost with this thanks again

Age is unimportant.
The boat is rated 10 ho; I usually recommend at least 80% of that max.
Yes, 6 hp is 20% increase over 5.
Yes, payload is a big factor.
Trim is always trial and error; proper trim will get you on plane faster.
Try a Tohatsu 9.8 and compare.
