Hi guys I'm presently in the process of buying a 12 year old mercruiser 350 mag mpi that I just learned is raw water cooled. Are there problems with that cooling type and it's age, boat lives in Florida engine lives in a 246 shamrock. I've never owned anything that didn't have a heat exchange of some sort

If it was maintained , I wouldnt think so. Find out lf/when the manifolds and risers were replaced last.Do atleast a 1/2 hr water test.

Thanks, it's at a dealer and all I know is that it has lived its life in florida west palm area, and I've hired a surveyor to wet test it before I buy

Maintenance is the key to any system.

And efficient flushing after use is one of the things that comes under maintenance. Easy to accomplish with a Trailered vessel, but still can be done with a non-trailered one.

I bought a boat that lived in salt all its life since 1969 in 2004. The engine was fine, although the engine had been through several sets of manifolds and elbows... then again, the previous owner had installed a tap on his raw water intake line and flushed the engine every time he used it with fresh water. Boat had a engine mounted raw water pump. He just hooked up a short length of garden hose that he stuck into a 5 gal pail that had a garden hose free running in it at dock side.
