To pee or not to pee

Have a 96 Mariner 15hp 2 cycle that is driving me crazy. The thermostat closes then opens--closes--opens--pee-no pee. etc. Is it advisable to remove the thermostat so it pees 100% of the time. Was told by dealer is this model does this so that the engine runs at the proper heat for emissions to burn properly. Impeller is good, lines are clean. Will removing the thermostat effect performance or hurt the engine. I'd rather see it pee all the time and not burn up.

In the old days people never worried about a " pisser " ---they just maintained their motors and installed a new impeller every 2 years.--------------Lots of those old motors are still running like new !

Have one of those SOBs in my shop that I can NOT get to pump water at any time--and the t-stat is out.

You might try this to calm your nerves: Remove the t-stat (two bolts) and drill a small hole in it so water will continuously move through it. This'll give you an indication of flow even when the dumb thing is closed.

PS: Beats me why Merc didn't do this!

Drill a hole in the stat?? Mine pumps really well and strong when it opens the stat. The previous owner had new prop and impellor installed in fall and then decided to be legal and move down to a 9.9 for Penn. Lakes.

Does anyone know if there is a lower temp stat for this motor?

Have owner all Evinrude previously--they pumped 24/7--what's up with the Mariner?

It pumps a strong pencil thick stream and cools down the stream fast but can I dump the stat without issues?

That's the way it is designed to work. Why worry about it? Go fishing and forget it...change the impeller in 2-3 years.

Did a previous impeller fail? Could have chunks of rubber stuck in water tube or t'stat. Not being familiar with your motor, could you temporarily run motor with t'stat cover off, allowing debris to wash out. Most outboards will piss continually wether t'stat is open or closed. I took a 15hp evinrude apart once that had two water tube grommets installed in pump housing, of course the second one was blocking the water tube. If the pump housing isn't sealed right or is missing an o-ring you could have pump problems also.

The waterpump indicator ( pee stream ) was installed for " gamblers " as in those who want to gamble on loosing the motor due to overheat !!--------If you install a new impeller every 3 years then there is no need to look for a pisser.

..."Did a previous impeller fail? "

No. It looked exactly like the new one after I pulled it back out to take a look.

The owner is taking to a Merc tech and promised me to 'fess up when he gets it going. I'll let everyone know when I know.
