TLDI 90 - Grinding noise when in gear

Hi!

My TLDI 90 has me worried....

Last fall I changed the gear case oil before storage. I did not noticed any metal flakes but I did not pay particular attention as everything seemed fine. So first trip of the season comes, engine starts very good but when in gear there is a deep grinding noise/vibration in either reverse or forward, the noise is not very loud. Neutral no noise at all. So took the boat out right away. My first tought was that transmission would not engage properly.

Took new oil out and no trace of metal chips (oil was new), remove the lower unit and push/pull on the transmission cam rod with no apparent difficulty to shift between r,n and f. Put new oil in and reassembled everything on the engine. Got it running on the hard and with proper safety, engaged in both forward and reverse, with the help of a bearing stethoscope could not ear any grinding, seemed like normal noise of gear turning one against the other. Also checked that everything was in normal position at shift link connection from control. The stainless prop also looks ok.

So second trip... the same as it was at first trip, very disapointing and concerning... Again when in gear a deep grinding noise/vibration in either reverse or forward.

Looking at service manual not sure in what direction to go...

Thanks for any help!!
