"My 1972 Nautaline with twin 318's does not have the timing tabs on the engine so I cannot put a light on to check the timing.

Where can these be purchased? My friend found two different types, but neither fits the engines."

Then...where are the timing marks? On the damper (like a car engine)?

"The boat has had the engines

"The boat has had the engines out during a rebuild of the stringers and transom. While out, the heads were redone and engines painted. Apparantly, some of the covers were removed, and I assume thats when the timing marks were taken off. the engine was painted before putting back into boat and I think these tabs were not put back on. There aren't any marks to check."

"Grrr! (Why do people do dumb things like that?)

Looks like you'll have to 'blueprint' the timing system like we race car engine builders do.

Here's the procedure:

1. Find an accurate TDC position and mark the flywheel through the timing hole (if it's not already marked).

2. Mark the bellhousing across from the timing mark on the flywheel (at TDC).

3. Using an advancing timing light, set the timing at 26 degrees at 3,000 rpms.

I can walk you through these steps in detail if you wish.

"Jeff, That's the suggest

"Jeff, That's the suggestion I made to my buddy, but I didn't know about the advancing timing light thingy doo bob. I figured we could somehow figure out degree marks to mark on the block or something like that. I'll run this procedure past him. If we need a detailed walk through, I'll let you know.
Thank you for your help."

"Jeff, I didn't mention that wwe have already put the electronic ignition kit in the distributors. We put the Pertronix kit in.
Still 26 degrees at 3,000rpm?"

"Yes. The advancing timing li

"Yes. The advancing timing light has a computer built in that lets you dial in the advance you want to see. So, if the distributor is set right (26 * and running at 3,000 rpms), and the timing light is dialed in to 26 degrees, the mark will be right at TDC.

Harbor Freight sells one for under 50 bucks.

"Timing by ear works well. Run

"Timing by ear works well. Run at 3500 to 4000 advance it till it is running good, then back off toward retard until it starts to rattle, then advace just a little. done"
