"Hi all. have an '03 VP 5.0L GL engine that I believe the timing is off. Set it with a SnapOn timing light with the Advance feature before I read about this "Shunt." Seems to run fine, just slow out of the hole I think and can't hit the top end my buddy has with same engine(same length and type of boat, just different manufacturer). So 2 questions. 1. did I hurt anything with setting the timing without the "shunt" and how much is it off without the "shunt?" Thanks"

"The function of the shunt is

"The function of the shunt is to block the timing advance function used to keep a stable idling from operating. If the shunt is not installed You may see the timing 'jump' from time to time to keep the engine idling properly. If You disregard these 'jumps' and use the lowest reading as reference when setting, You may manage without the shunt. The setting point is to fix the lowest timing advance which the system may go to and which is programmed into the EMM as the lowest set, synchronizing EMM and engine."
