Timing question

Had bad experience with 5.7L i

Had bad experience with 5.7L installation. Replaced Volvo with Indmar. I am worried the timing. No marine dealer nearby. The timing guage under the flywheel has the notch set near 50-60. The manual says it should be set at 10. Am I looking at the wrong guage? It is scuffed from installation. The engine is carburated. The installer said he timed it but the guage is set wrong. Maybe the factory set it there? How can I tell if it set wrong? I don't want to hurt new engine. This has been a bad experience. Any ideas? Thanks.

"You need to find TDC on hte motor accurately, then mark the flywheel where it it. Any good mechanic knows how to do this: Pull # 1 plug, stick a timing bump stop tool in iits place, then rotate the motor with a socket until the piston hits the stop (in two directions). The mid-point btween the two bump stops is the center. All race engines are set up this way--we can't trust the factory mark.
