"I reciently had a little checkup on my 02 Merc. The mechanic said my timing was off the scale. Therefore he adjusted it back to somewhere. Could he be wrong? Before My proline Bay ran 52 mph now it will barely reach 46 mph. It is hard to start cold and seems slugish. Prior to his adjustment, I had not moved the timing since the factory setting. I do not intend to move it myself even though I am very mechanical. I would like to know how to check the timing for myself and what the top end timing should be on a Mercury 2002 150 XL saltwater (Carberator). The mechanic's comment was that it ran good before due to the timing being too advanced."
