79 evinrude 100 model 100999S.Well the engine cranks well but wont idle at times. runs out to plane but is not producing power. All plugs are firing. When at home on hose and put into gear . prop spins like it wantsto jup off the trailer and float on air . But when its in the water and under a load I et piss poor performance. What could cause this

"Well , if you keep running it on the trailer at full throttle you will soon be looking for another motor.IT IS BAD FOR THE MOTOR and proves nothing at all.Have you removed the carburetors and reed valves for a good inspection.Spend a few bucks and have a shop run it on a dynomometer to determine the condition of the engine.Sounds like you missed some dirt in the carburetor jets during cleaning."

What are the compression readings of all numbered cylinders? Standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs, cylinders are numbered as:

4....3

With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Does it?

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040. Are they?

If the above are as they should be, as ikia indicates..... the carburetors probably require cleaning and rebuilding."
 
"I think I found the problem .

"I think I found the problem . Hopefully !!! I removed bottom Carb after seeing that fuel was not flowing by the butterflies . Only top carb. Also found hose that runs to that carb was damaged . Replaced hose . Thought that was entire problem so like an idot put carb back on without cleaning effectively. Did not blow the tubes that let fuel run to butterfles . Found some orange jello like substance in the bowl . Plan to dismantle tommorow night and do it right . Cross my fingers and hope this solves my troubles. Next time I will just buy a new boat
