Timing Mercruiser 4.3 Thunderbolt IV

Boat started running a.little.rough and thought it was due to changing gas. Kept dying when revvved up to 3000 rpm, but died. Brought boat home and saw #2 plug wire disconnected. Will that throw timing off? How do I reset distributor/timing since I can't get engine to run? Engine cranks but won't start/run.

.

If it ran before just losing a plug wire does not change timing. you physically would have to turn the dist by hand to affect it .

Have never known gas to just change.............................................
color ,texture, smell, octane
etc

Learning about this site.amd replies. I mistakenly sent my reply to thread. Bought this 93 Stingray form inexperienced boater. Motor.would die at about 1000 rpm running on earmuffs. Changed rotor, cap, plug wires, plugs,.rebuilt carb and removed all old gas. Still died. Reset timing. Boat ran beautifully. Ran on non-ethanol 94, as I do with my 87 FourWynns. Then read in Seloc manual,.that this newer 4.3 can have carbon deposits from higher octane. So I lowered to 87 octane and added Seafoam for possible carbon deposits. Gas is clear, motor cranks,.bit no start.
Help is appreciated
