"I have twin 1988 454 350's. I went to time them today and am puzzled as to the mark to use on the fly wheel. When I first hit them with the timing light there was a bolt in close alignment to the edge of the timing plate. I can not see an actual mark, any advise as to what to look for?

(yesterday I mistaken posted this at the end of a temperature thread, sorry)"

"Hi Kevin....I have timing indicator tabs on the front of my 82 350hp/454cid Crusaders, over timing cover. But someone posted there is also a way to do it at flywheel(I never knew that). If its easy to get to the front of the motor, why not use those...good luck and keep us posted. Ken"

"On my 454/350 engine, there are 3 marks on the flywheel. One is TDC and is a simple groove cut into the flywheel. To the left and the right of that are circular marks, that are used to time the engine with the edge of the inspection hole on the bell housing, one for a LH engine and one for a RH engine.

The best way to see these marks are by highlighting them with whiteout, or white nail polish. Needless to say, this is best done with the engines off

With highlighting, they will be easily seen whilst timing the engine."

"Hi, Thank you to all who replied.

I spent some time, too much, Saturday AM triing to find the marks on the fly wheel. I enlisted the help of another owner of the same vintage engines at the marina. We both ended up scratching our heads, we could not identify any mark on the flywheel itself.

With the fronts of the engines buried under the deck and against a bulkhead there is no easy access to the harmonic balance and tabs. So we got a little creative. With four hands, a timing light and a mirror, we coud get a peak at the marks/tabs on the front. We finally got them timed, just in time for the weather to turn, so now I have to wait to take her out for a spin to see if we got it right.

After setting them using the frontend, we still could not see anything on the flywheel.

Thanks, again.

Kevin"

"this was a comment I got from Tim Giffin on the marks a month ago... I have not had time to look myself...

scott also depending on the engine the timing marks may also be located on the tranny end of the engine under an oblong rubber plug and you can time the engine from there. My engines sit backwards so this makes it easy for me. If this is the case for you, when you remove the rubber plug on top of the flywheel/tranny housing the 10 deg marks are right there.

"Hi Scott....

Guys I cannot remember what type of mark was on the flywheel itself, but I believe is was nothing more than a "dot" very close to the teeth, on the flywheel housing itself under the oblong rubber plug are three marks...10BTDC/TDC/10ATDC

If you guys cannot find the marks but get it timed to 10 degrees using the mirror etc....you could scribe a mark on the flywheel yourself to use in the future.

Hope this helps you guys....."

"Tim,

THanks,I'll hit them with the light again this weekend, looking close to the teeth. I was thinking of using the mirror to align the marks on the frontend and use a pin-punch to mark the fly-wheel to use in the future. Maybe I'll get lucky and find the original marks, I had been looking more at the area close to the timing plate.

Thanks again.

Kevin"
