Timing mark on crusader 270

I have been trying to set timing on a 1978 Crusader 270, LH rotation. Should be 10 deg.. BTDC. Using the plug wire for #1 cylinder the timing mark on harmonic balancer is no where to be seen/found. I started moving pickup to other wires. I found the mark using #7 plug wire and at 10 deg BTDCit seems to run fine.

Would using a balancer from a RH rotation cause this? Or is there something else I should be looking at?

thanks

#1 cylinder should be the cylinder that corresponds to the TDC markings.
It's possible for the outer balancer ring to slip on the inner hub. In order to verify, you'll need to perform a PPS procedure.
PPS = positive piston stop.

.

Same balancer...so no to that one.

You can do the check Rick suggests or you can try the timing mark on your flywheel.
