Timing an AQ145A

I have a Volvo AQ145 motor and I'm having a bit of difficulty getting it started. I had the cylinder head machined due to a warped head/blown head gasket and have it all put back together but it does not start. I verified the fuel pump is pumping fuel and that I have spark.

I'm unsure about timing however for the gear/cam that drives the fuel pump and spins the distributor. My top cam has the notch that lines up with the top of the valve cover, and my crankshaft pulley also lines up with the 'zero' marker on the water pump section. When I removed the water pump and plate, that pulley underneath it which is also driven by the timing belt, has the timing mark at almost 3 o'clock. Where should the timing mark should be or is that correct? I can't find any sort of markings around it. :(

Thanks all!

See your Volvo Penta OEM manual for this description. It will clearly show images of how they are to be indexed.

On that note....., and I'm not proposing this....., the counter shaft does not necessarily need to be indexed. It does not really care what the crankshaft and camshaft are doing.
What does matter, is where/how the distributor drive gear is indexed to the crankshaft/camshaft!

It sounds like your crank/cam are OK!

Bring # 1 around to TDC on C/S.
See where the rotor is aming.
If not correct, you will need to re-index the counter shaft to the crankshaft.
Or..... (and again, not advising this......), you re-index the distributor and set BASE advance.

The correct method would be to follow the OEM instructions!
This way, the next guy in won't be confused!

NOTE: not only set BASE advance, but also check TA.
Your OEM specs will give you this info!

Use the Seloc and/or Clymers at your own descretion.
OEM is best, IMO.

Is #1 TDC when the crankshaft is at zero? (according to the timing markings)

Is there a marking on that cam and around it to signify where it should be 'for the next guy'??

I popped off the distributor cap and the rotor is point to spark plug number 1. (Plug nearest to the bow of the boat)

The crankshaft and camshaft are lined up with their respective marks signifying zero. Is that also TDC on cylinder one, or am I missing something??

I have fuel and spark, but it won't start. Any ideas?? Besides eBaying it... although I'm close! :)

Your timing is probably off. Loosen the distributor and try to advance it or retard it a few degrees, then crank again and see what happens. It could also be that the distributor is one or two teeth off the mark.

It is also possible that either you are not getting fuel into the cylinders, or that the cylinders are flooded with too much fuel from several failed starting attempts. For the first possiblity, verify that the accelerator pump squirts fuel into the carb whenever you move the throttle lever. If yes, then the engine should at least attempt to start while cranking and squirting fuel into the carbs. And if the problem is too much fuel inside the intake manifold/cylinders, then move the throttle lever to 75%-100% then attempt to start, but be ready to quickly back the throttle lever to idle if the engine starts!!

Any idea where the timing mark is on that cam? Or rather where it should be lining up to? I found what looks to be a mark on the cam, just not sure where to line it up to. If the pulley on both the crankshaft and camshaft line up to their marks, is that TDC on piston 1?
