I REMOVED TIMING CHAIN COVER A

I REMOVED TIMING CHAIN COVER AND LINE UP MARKS ON GEARS BUT DISTRIBUTOR IS ON FIFTH POSITION NOT # 1 IS THIS NORMAL
 
timing marks on harmonic balan

timing marks on harmonic balancer are used for cylinder timing.timing marks on crank gear and cam gear are used to time the camshaft.

THERE IS A MAEK ON CRANK GEAR THAT LINES UP WITH MARK ON CAM GEAR I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WOULD ALSO BE TDC FOR #1 PISTON SO SHOULDNT THE DISTRIBUTOR BE ALSO IN GENERAL AREA

"Nope, the dist rotor can point anywhere in the 360 deg circle.If the cap is not marked with a #1 position.Any post can be called #1 cylinder.
Set the cam timing marks ,rotate engine untill #1 intake lifter raises then falls, using a TDC tool or a wooden dowel, turn motor untill the piston stops all upward movement, this is TDC. install dist , if no post is marked #1, pick a post for #1 and install wires in the correct firing order."

ENGINE WAS RUNNING FINE JUST BROUGHT IT TOOK TO SHOP HAD IT CHECKED OUT AND PUT IN WATER WHEN I WENT TO ACCELERATE START TO BOG DOWN TOOK IT BACK TO DOCK PUT IN NUTRAL STARTED RUNNING ROGH AND BACK FIRING CALL MECHANIC PUT NEW POINTS ROTOR CAP CONDENSER AND IT WILL NOT START HE SAID SOUNDS LIKE TIMING CHAIN JUMPED TOOK COVER OFF NOT THE PROBLEM MARKS LINE UP NICE CHAIN AND TEETH LOOK GOOD NOTICED DISTRIBUTOR POSITION AND EAS CONFUSE D
