"1989 GT150 has a very light oil leak at the top seal (under flywheel, been there for the 4 years I've had it and run it almost weekly.) It began to have intermittant cranking issues a few months ago and now it won't crank (no spark at any cylinder.) The stator, rectifier & powerpack are less than 2 years old and all test out fine. The sensor coils do not ohm out and are not putting out any voltage (supposed to be at least 0.2 or 1.2 volts depending on which terminals to test, there is nothing.) I removed the timer base this evening and it has a small amount of oil buildup on it and maybe in it. How about a gentle rinsing of the sensor coils (methylene chloride?) There is nothing to loose since I will replace it."

"Better to simply use mineral sprits, then blow it off with pressurized air.

When you get it back together, remove the spark plugs, disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine, then crank the engine by using a small jumper from the battery terminal of the starter solenoid to the 3/8" solenoid that energizes the solenoid.

If you have spark with that RED plug disconnected but do not with it connected, replace the ignition switch.

When you say that the engine won't crank, I suspect the engine is cranking but is not firing. THere is a difference."

"The engine turns over just fine, but with no spark. When I first began to test it a few weeks ago, I got some intermittant spark, then nothing. I did a key switch elimination test which required disconnecting the black/yellow wire from the ignition (no change.) I'll try the red connector."

"Regardless of the age of the stator, check it to see if those large black coils are melting down again, and if so, replace it."

"You are so right Joe, I replaced mine and my motor is working great. My stator I had on before was only 7 mths old. turned out they sent me a bad one. CDI garrentees there product and sent me a new one.

"The stator tests out just fine (979 and 982 ohms, spec is 985 +/- 25 ohms), has no leads grounded and looks like it did new. The original melted down bigtime."
