Timer base sensor assy

"In an effort to find my intermitant spark issues on my 81 evin 90hp it has been suggested that the stator could be the culprit. It has also been suggested by a local mech., that he would suspect the timer base assy.

Is there a way to eliminate one over the other. Both look ok and are not melting down so that is not an indicator."
