" Joe, I want to first thank you for the great site. I can see from fishing through the over 4,000 conversations, that you are a life-line for people like me.

Now the problem...

I have for awhile have had noises coming from my power tilt/trim unit. I have a 91 125hp Johnson. A few years ago I had the unit rebuilt and since then the unit holds solid. The problem I am still having is a growling noise when the motor comes down and sets on the 2 rams and begins to push them in. The noise is only evident when the motor is pressing down the rams, and not when I use the motor kick-stand and let the rams fully recess. I know that the trim motor itself had a crack magnet, but it still seems to pump fine. I did pump some grease today into the two zerks located on the tilt tube but the noise still persists. Any of your expert advise would be greatly appreciated. "

"Craig.... First off, don't thank me for the site. It belongs to Andrew Menkart. I just stopped in one day and decided to stay for awhile. However, you can thank me for the advice... if it helps.

Now, the PTT growl. The most probable cause would be that the top retaining pin in the center tilt piston rod has some corrosion in it. The corrosion usually gets between the outer area of the nylon bushing which causes a clamping/seizing action around the pin. The cure is to remove the pin, then the bushing, clean all surfaces thoroughly, grease, and re-assemble. Let me know how you make out.

" Joe,

I removed the pin, cleaned and greased and reinstalled. I ran it up and down quite a bit, but it still has the growling noise. Any other thoughts?

Thank you "

"Craig.... That is puzzling. I've encountered that problem many times, and the cause has always been that top tilt cylinder bushing assy.

Were the bushings free in the top of that tilt piston, or frozen within it.... and were they removed so that they could be cleaned, greased etc.

There's always the possibility that the inner portion of the tilt cylinder piston being scored and binding at some point, but it's inlikely. Usually when that type scoring takes place, the unit jerks/bumps it's way down.

In a case such as that where it's difficult to locate the noise, I would use a mechanics stethoscope and attempt to pinpoint where it's coming form.
