Tilt Trim Repair

I need to change the wiper and seal on a trim cylinder on my 1980 115hp Johnson (J115TLCSA). How do I relieve the pressure in the system, so I don't get a face full of hydraulic fluid when I pull the cap off the cylinder? I'll be changing it with the motor on the boat, so the motor will be at full tilt position.

thanks in advance

Very easy.
at the side of the trim unit you will find a relif valve.
it normaly has a slot for a very large screwdriver.
Once you have turned this a couple of complete turns it will have relieved the system of pressure and you
can manualy lift up the engine and jam it up so it dont fall onto you.
Now to undo the trim cylinder tops you can either make a but a 2 prong tool and give it a sharp blow and
then proceed to do the seals etc.
seal kits are not too bad, and its a very easy job to do the trim ram seals.

The main tilt ram requires you take out the centre rod on the engine, again only way is with engine up.
These can be a pain, so get ready with a good brass drift and a big hammer, yes a big hammer just incase.

Once you have completed the task of new seals, make sure you trim it fully down and fully up about a doz times with a couple of minutes between each cycle to get any air out.

hope this helps

Thanks Phil. That's what I thought, but I'd rather ask first. Makes sense to me too, that way the trim rams are down, and not extended. I don't have to worry about the tilt ram, it's good, just one bad leak on one trim ram.

And Lou, I'd say that your trim/tilt motor is cooked. The clicking you hear are likely the relays. The slight noise from the motor means that its getting power I think.

Sometimes things just break. No warning, no nothing. Sorta like anything else in life.
