Tilt Trim Problems

Hey there!

My names Kevin and I picked up a 1979 Larson with a 235HP Johnson on it with tilt/trim issues recently.

When you hit up, you can hear the solenoid click, when you hit down it makes no sound. Either direction does not move the motor whatsoever.

This setup has the 3 wire tilt motor, black, green and blue wires. I disconnected them and when I jump the black to the negative on the battery and the green to the positive I get a short like I'm connecting a ground to the postive - same result when I connect black to ground and blue to positive. Is the black not negative or am I testing this wrong?

If the black is negative and the green (for down) or the blue (for up) is positive then what could be the problem? I don't see any obvious problems in the wiring harness for the tilt motor - could there actually be a short in the motor itself or is this simply a sign that I need a new motor?

Thanks for reading and I look forward to your reply.

Thanks!

The up mode incorporates the solenoid (blue wire)

The down mode is usually direct wiring to the electric motor.

Yes, 3 wire motor.... black is ground (-), blue (+) = up... green (+) = down.

Using jumper wires from the battery as you explained should cause the electric motor to run. If sparks fly all over the place, either the motor is shorted or the hydraulics jammed.

Appreciate the reply! I was scratching my head a bit because everything I read was saying if it has a black wire that is ground, and if it's a 2 wire motor then it's grounded where it mounts. So when it sparked I didn't get what I was doing wrong lol.

I'll inspect the wires more carefully and if I can't find a fault anywhere then I'll order a motor over the winter.

How do I determine what tilt motor will fit my setup? Are they pretty universal? Or can I easily find a model number or something?

Thanks again!

Original and superseded 1979 235hp PTT Moto part number are:

387277 --> 582155 ---> 584107

Unfortunately it's listed as N/A... a dealer may still have one OR some repair shop may have a blown engine with a good PTT motor.

Also keep in mind that your electric motor may be able to be rebuilt by a reputable electrical repair shop.

I had a simular problem with a tilt, I took the pump motor off, stripped it and cleaned the inside. then I connected blue to + and green to - and it worked then I reversed it and it spun the other way.
while it was off I tested the circuit which was showing no power. I replaced the two relays and it all works fine now. (that was, however a two wire green/blue system

I recently had the same problem. I removed my solenoid and tested it. the attachment will tell you how to fix it.View attachment Trim solenoid repair.pdf
