"hey guys im stumped.changed from points to pertronix ignition and trim motor kills the engine when used, ive removed the trim motor and all looks to be fine if i disconnect trim motor and work the selonoids its fine but as soon as i hook the wires and use the trim the engine dies ive tried new grounds thinking it was a ground and nothing seems to help so i was hopeing someone else had some ideas thanks. This is an 87 2.3 ford omc."

"Sounds like the classic sympt

"Sounds like the classic symptom of not enough power for the ignition circuit when using the trim. Recheck all of your connections, did you rewire to feed the Pertronix with fulltime 12volts or is it still being fed through the resistor wire?"

"thanks bob yes bob it is stil

"thanks bob yes bob it is still fed through the resistor wire i was going to try removing the resistor wire and replaceing with an external resistor ,but now you have me thinking i dont want any resistance??????"

read the instructions that cam

read the instructions that came with the pertronix unit - it's very specific about when you want resistance and when you don't - see where your coil fits in the instructions

"I think if you recheck the in

"I think if you recheck the instructions they will tell you that it needs the full 12v, the resistor wire is going to act like an external ballast resistor and cause a low voltage problem, especially when using a high current device such as a trim motor. If you have any doubts you call and check with Pertronix support, those guys are very good.

Also have you built and installed the Pertronix diode fix to make your ESA work or have you got one of the newer ones from CDI/Rapair that are compatible with Pertronix?"

kept the resistor with mine -

kept the resistor with mine - instructions were specific about some coils needing to keep it

well i did read the instructio

well i did read the instructions again and come to find out that you dont want any resistance going to the coil and mine was still the resistor wire added me a new wire and that fixed my trim problem and my starting problem.thanks for all your imput

"Hy Stat...understand that som

"Hy Stat...understand that some of the coils still need the resistor or wire but usually the electronic ignition needs the 12v, so to get around it instead of wiring it up to the + post on the coil, sometimes you need to run a separate 12v wire to feed the Pertronix, this way the ignition and the coil are happy."

"Pat...not sure if your talkin

"Pat...not sure if your talking about the + wire(red) for the Pertronix but you need to have it fed from an ignition supplied source, so on the OMC's that have a resistor wire you can simply go to the other end of that wire which goes into a splice coming off the alternator, this splice will have 12v all the time when the key is turned on.Caution note here though is to make sure and follow the instructions for your particular Pertronix unit."
