Tilt seal replacement

Hey everyone! got a question for you. I am in the process of replacing the trim and tilt seals on my power trim tilt unit, they were leaking pretty bad. The unit is out of a 1984 Evinrude 70. So far I have done both of the trim seal sets no problem. But I have no idea what to do with the tilt rod because its got the piston at one end and the pin connection at the other end. My question is how do I get the tilt rod apart so I can get the cap off and replace the seals? It looks like the piston unscrews from the tilt rod but I haven't had any luck in getting it to budge.

Perhaps loctite was used at the factory.-----Use some heat on the piston and try that.----Use a vice with wood blocks to protect the piston ?

Tried all that without success, the whole thing turns in vice the wood blocks can only hold so much and anything else would destroy it. Now Im considering living with leaks, my neighbors will hate me for it though.

I assume from what you've stated (vice, etc) that you have the unit off the engine and on your workbench.

Using a spanner wrench that has the proper size pins to insert into the seal cap, unscrew the cap. Now the entire piston assembly can be removed from the tube. It is now no problem to hold the top of the shaft in a vice and unscrew the piston off the bottom of the shaft.

I finally got it apart! Wood blocks in a vice clamped down on one end and a pipe wrench on the other did the trick. I think heat helped a little too as there was quite a bit of loctite on the threads when I pulled it apart.

Unfortunately now I have another issue with reassembly. I have no idea what this trim tilt unit is off of all I know is it bolts up to my engine, which has made ordering parts an issue. The trim seals worked no problem but the seals for the tilt cylinder are all wrong. The orings are too big and the wiper does not come anywhere close to fitting in the cap. Were there many variations in the trim tilt units each year and do different units fit different engines? I looked for a pert number of some sort on the new trim tilt with no avail. Is there anywhere I should check specially?

A picture or a detailed description of the unit would help ie.........

Two wire motor, three wire motor??

Two trim rams straddling one larger tilt cylinder??

Manual release valve on bottom starboard portion of unit??

Well I feel pretty stupid now. I didn't see that there were two tilt cylinders shown on the diagram. To be fair the second one wasn't fully shown I had to scroll the image over a bit and there it was! I appreciate it though I wouldn't have figured that one out this week! Ordered the other seal kit hopefully that does it! Thanks again!
