Tilt Problems

I recently bought my first outboard motor a 1989 9.9 Mariner. I was having trouble figuring out how to tilt the motor but read to put it in gear and did the trick. Now the problem is, I can't figure out how to let in back down without reaching way up inside and holding the piece that goes into the slots. Hope that made sense.

I smashed a finger doing I that way.

Supposedly, you tilt the motor all the way up and that dopey trailer lock releases.
