"I recently purchased a neglec

"I recently purchased a neglected 83 24' Bayliner with a 280 outdrive. The tilt was not working(motor was fine) The drive unit is frozen in the bellhousing so I removed the top of the tilt drive and found that the clutch nut has broken at the threaded top where it sits inside the spring.
I would like to service the lower end of the tilt drive assy but am afraid to muscle or bang on the side of the housing to get it to release.
Any ideas as to how the clutch nut broke at the threads on the shaft and also how to get the housing freed up. Also, is the clutch nut available or will I have to find a complete assy."

"You made a very wise decision

"You made a very wise decision. These housing are/can be very brittle... and I've seen my share of "owner broken" housings!

Loosen the two bolts.
Lift the drive up some.
Place a piece of hard wood between the arm of the main suspension fork and the lift unit "pressure plate".
Now, carefully push down on the drive until the lift unit housing raises UP.
If it will not budge.... apply some heat to the surrounding area of the "Transom Shield".
This will ever so slightly expand the aluminum and soften any sealant that may be around the joint.
Give that a try.

What ever you do, do not use exccessive force on this housing and NEVER use a wedge between the two. This will break the flange off.

You may also very gently try a pipe wrench on the shaft of the housing and rotate it back and forth some. Sure, it will make some marks, but those can be easily taken care of later.

Now you can take the entire unit apart and service it.

All parts are still available for these units.
The clutch will be difficult to find used... but look on e-Bay... I do see them for sale occasionally.

FYI... some think that these are a trim unit... these are a lift out unit only.
Never power up while the drive is tilted any. "

"Ken,

I have a 280 drive on

"Ken,

I have a 280 drive on mine as well. I was letting my daughter drive while I was on the stern fishing and she grounded the boat on a sandbar (soft aground, pretty much just stuffed the outdrive) I tried to tilt up to drift off but the drive wouldn't lift. We finally dug ourselves off and returned to port. After pulling apart the tilt (not trim) motor assy I discovered the nut was sheared from the threaded collar. Thus just floating on the shaft. I had a spare nut and installed and readjusted. Works fine. I would suspect your drive was down and stuck (on the trailer or in the water) and it was attempted to lift. You can order the nut thru any dealer but it's worth a run to local marinas as I've seen piles of these in bins because some shops just replace the unit as a whole for patrons that just want to get underway as fast as they can.

Good luck with it. (Listen to Ricardo above, good advice there)

Denny"

Thanks Denny and Ricardo for y

Thanks Denny and Ricardo for your responses. I have ordered the clutch nut with the threaded collar so that I can attempt to remove the entire housing by inserting a piece of wood between the ram and the locking pin. I wish that I had found that bin full of parts.
