hello gents...heres the deal...having already had trouble with my tilt motor , i have torn apart and rebuilt my whole tilt system on my '67 omc stringer / electric shift...for awhile all was well....then recently i went fishing and as we launched the drive went down like it should but when returned would not go up.....the motor engages but the spur gear does not...hmmmm so i loaded the boat on the trailer with the drive down and pulled out very slowly...i was able to pull the drive up by hand and letting go it goes right down....so , i tied it up and trailered home...this morning i took the drive off and serviced the clutch pack , carefully inspecting everything and put it all back together...same issue...i also inspected the hammer blow coupling and motor...all wich looks good...so i dont unerstand....any ideas? thanx in advance...dimitri:mad:

Sounds like you understand how it supposed to work.

Looking at the little gear... the one that turns the half moon gear is there a cap on the end of the shaft ?

If yes remove the cap and turn the screw, that will tighten the clutch pack.

Say you don't have that screw then me thinks the clutch pack went, if what you say all is well with all the other componets of the clutch pack.

That's a big if.

Finally there is a solution freeze the clutch pack together.

Drill a hole insert a bolt and nut.

The clutch pack is there for only one reason, if you hit something with the drive it will allow the drive to tilt up.

yes master , as you sugguested the clutch pack went...dunno why....i took it all apart and put it back together per the instuction in the manual except used grease instead of 30 wt oil....working now , but suspicious as to why it was slipping ????? took it out and all worked fine , if it happens again ima gonna put a through bolt in it and be done with it....if then i hit something and ruin it , ill fix it and sell this ole barge and buy something with a outboard. funny thing is the day it chit the bed on me i came across a fellow omc owner whos anchor was stuck in the river....he was trying to get unstuck with the engine and drive by putting it in reverse and turning the wheel wich made him go in circles...as i went by him giggling , i offered help and he declined...but he saw my drive and asked what year it was...i replied "67" and he asked if i ever had any serious trouble...i said no and he was glad to hear that...later , i see him with a cut anchor rope and he sees me trying to tie up the drive so it doesnt drag all the way home....whatta couple of dorks huh? looking in from the outside im sure we both looked like idiots...thanx for your help mm , as usual you saved the day for me again...dimitri
