Tilt goes down just fine but binds on up. Can only raise the unit by clicking then pulling up on lower unit a little at a time. Both the external gear and rack look good. Checked by unhooking the tilt motor and it works in both directions. Put it back in. checked the gear box.
The oil is thick & milky and I have drained it. Took the cover off, removed star shaped assembly, filpped switch and it works just fine up/down (no load). Can only think that the pivot point is binding up. Any ideas?
Thanks"

"Cleaning all the terminals and connections at the relays always a good idea - then if still no go - grab a 9/16" wrench and remove the three bolts holding the quadrant gear onto the outdrive - then lift the drive up and take the quadrant out- now you can see if the drive lifts up and down freely- if not, grease the pivots. and now with the quadrant gear still off- try the motor again and see how well the motor performs with only the load of the tilt clutch on it- if it's still labouring, you can either pull the motor or you could pull out the clutch assembly. I always put 2 gaskets on the tilt clutch cover - it helps. 90% of these stringer tilt problems are no grease in the pivots, or bad relay connections"

I'll try

"THANKS Hy Stat
I'll try that,....... as soon as it stops pouring here.

Is there a grease fitting hidden somewhere for the pivots? Have not located it yet. Am waiting to recieve the manual I ordered."

Yay it stopped raining and I got my repair manual!!!! I think the previous owner did not have one.
On the Tilt clutch, there is supposed to be a snap ring on the end of the worm gear/tilt motor shaft. Not there. after removing triangular plate (w/3 bolts) I see that the end is flush with the housing.
Is this possibly a diffrent style or was it ommited?
The manual I have says that the worm gear should just slip out by wiggling the clutch shaft. Ain't mooving!! and am reluctant to realy put too much pressure on it.
Have ordered a new seal kit, this oil looks like a milkshake.
If anyone can help........Thanks"

early 1970's drives had snap ring, later drives have triangular plate. the plug under the triangular retainer is just held in by an o-ring and corrosion. Take side clutch cover off-get a hammer and punch and hit the BIG brass gear at about the 2 o'clock and the plug will fly out the back- resealing is futile- pack with grease -but whatcha doin' in the clutch?"

"Are you saying that "milk

"Are you saying that "milkshake oil" is ok?
Pack w/ what kind of grease? (blue stuff? same as axel?)

got into this trying to figure out why I can get it to go up but not down. it works fine w/out the load of the drive on it. Batteries are at full charge,

Thanks for your help Hy"

"remove the quadrant and turn

"remove the quadrant and turn the gear. the plug, and gear/shaft will pop right out. snap ring was replaced by triangular cover. you wont have both. don't attempt to disassemble the clutch assembly unless you have a press available to reassemble it."

"Thanks Scott,
Came right out

"Thanks Scott,
Came right out. And no, I don't plan on taking it appart.
Am concerned about the water in the oil.
Can you give me your take on oil/grease as HyStat suggests."

"I would stick with oil person

"I would stick with oil personally. check the bushing in the housing(behind gear) and replace if bad. they do tend to leak, but if yours has a fill/drain plug in the bottom(it should)it's easy to change oil."

"No plug on the bottom.
But t

"No plug on the bottom.
But thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. It's not like it should be too bad since it's not an "always on type of thing"

Thanks All
