Tilt dust cover replacement on 2000 Honda 115

Hello all,

I'm planning on replacing the tilt o-rings etc. on my 2000 115 Honda. Is it possible to replace the dust cover/o-ring that inserts in to the top of the cap? Can the cap be removed from the piston?

Good news! I went on line and found a photo of the tilt piston. There is a nut on the bottom that can be removed which in turn allows for the removal of the valve AND ROD GUIDE a.k.a cap.

Not necessarily....

The cap can be removed, but what seals are you going to order? There are no seals identified in the parts diagram. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2000/BF130AY XA/POWER TRIM-TILT/parts.html

You can change them on the Yamaha. Just looking at the trim units, I think they may be the same unit....but I am not sure. Everything looks the same if they are side by side. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/2002/130TLRA/POWER TRIM TILT ASSY 1/parts.html

I would not assume that the seals are the same as those in the trim caps. I do not know if they are or not. They are not the same on the Yamaha.

If you do take it apart, be sure to put the little springs and check balls back in exactly as they come out (if you remove them). The diagram does not show them, but they are there. They are the relief valves in case you hit something in the water.

I am not sure what the torque is on the large nut, but it is high. Be sure to use blue loctite when you put it back together.

The safest way (although certainly not the cheapest) is to change the entire piston rod.

I hope you are able to find the parts that you are looking for.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for the heads up! I was unaware that there were springs and check balls. I also noticed (just eyeballing) that the tilt cap seems to be a bit larger than the trim caps which leads me to believe as you stated that the o-ring seal and o-ring that fits on top of and inside the cap would be of a different size than those for the trim caps.

I would not have thought to use blue loctite. Thanks!

unfortunately, I will be unable to meet with the mechanic this weekend (03-11-17). I will meet with him sometime the following week or weekend and update you with my findings.
