Tilt and tr not working

Hi, hopefully some one can help me here..thanks in advance..I have a 1995 23’ Rinker Captiva with a merrier 350 and alpha one stern drive. Tilt and trim stopped work the other day. Was told to check the pump by jumping the poles on each solenoid..did that, they both worked, stern drive goes ip and down. Was also told to change both solenoids ..did that, still nothing. All YouTube videos show the when pushing the button on the throttle, it should click..mine isn’t clicking at all. Check the fuse..it’s good. Drive will still go up and down when crossing the poles on the solenoids but does nothing at all when pushing the up/down button or trailer up button..anyone know what else I need to check or fix? Thank!!

Near pump, there is a three prong small black connector which is the wiring from control to pump.

Look for that and unplug and replug in and see if it works.

If not we can help from there.

the fuse (20 amp) is inline with a small red wire. Is that the fuse you checked?

Look for broken RED wire at throttle control. You'll need to remove the handle to see it.
Blue = Sky (up)
Green = Grass (down)
Red = Power to the switch (from back of boat)

Rarely does switch fail & even rarer that it would fail both directions. So I suspect broken Red wire as that would take out both directions.

Is it possible that it could need the trim limit and sender replaced? I did find a broken wire on the left side of the outdrive. And they were both corroded up pretty good

The trim limit switch can stop the drive from going up only if it is broken in the wrong state.
The sender has no effect on trim function, it only controls trim gauge

If you have no trim up or down then trim limit switch is not your main issue.
The trim limit may be an issue if it does not work correctly but that will be a secondary issue.

Thank you for that info. Really appreciate it..will be looking to the other issues that were mentioned previously in this thread when I get the chance..again, thanks!!

Ok, so i checked all the fuses and all the wires, all looks good..replugged the red wire to the block..which is on the top pole of the bottom solenoid ..as soon as I turn the battery switch on, the starts running and is running the outdrive down without me touching the button..tries to attach pictures but it won’t let me, saying files are too large Can you tell me if I have a wire in the wrong place for this to happen?

Do you understand basic ekectricity and especially 12 Volts DC wiring as it related to cars or boats?
Do you have a 12 volt test light? Or a multi metter?

If not sure what your doing STOP and find someone who does. You could mistakenly blow your Altenator or ignition components....

Did you actually remove the throttle lever handle & see the 3 wires wrapped aound its hub?

Did you find the white push together connector from boat harness to the throttle control assy? The harness typically is maybe 2 feet long, throttlre control to white plug. (There will also be yellow/red wires seperatly. Disregard these 2 wires, nothing to do with your issue). Boat harness goes back to the red connector at the pump assembly. It may be required to remove the screws & the entire control from the wall. Depending on how the boat builder routed the harness & how you or any prior owners may have stuffed crap & gear up into the typical sidewall storage compartment it is entirely possible the harness is disconnected or damaged in a nice impossible to reach spot.

Since the red at the connector ON the pump should have 12 volts positive present assuming fuse is indeed good (check with meter or test light to verify).....
A jumper lead (which is essentially bypassing all the boat's forward wiring harness and switch) can go red to green OR red to blue ON THE SAME PLUG & pump should run in the respective direction.

Above you stated the following: "replugged the red wire to the block..which is on the top pole of the bottom solenoid"
Since I'm not at your boat, best I can recall is 3 wires in the rubber plug. Female connectors on pump end, male in harness end. So plugging & unplugging is 3 wires at once. How are you talking about?

attached is a schematic for the trim pump system. it shows a control with a detached Trailer button. Yours may have the trailer button on the handle so disregard that part, the actual wiring is the same in the harness.

Before you go doing unknown trouble shooting you should ask specific questions on what you are thinking of doing. Just pulling wires off and reconnecting them to possibly the wrong locations is not a good way to troubleshoot. This is a very basic and simple electrical system and very easy to diagnose basic electrical problems.

so maybe start answering questions we have asked before proceeding..............
