Tiller to Remote Control Conversion

I have an early 80's (1983 I believe) Evinrude 25hp with tiller that I would like to convert to remote controls. Is there a significant difference in how the controls attach to the motor/operate between manufacturers? Do I need to look for Johnson Evinrude controls or would Mercury controls for example work with my motor? I will be looking for used controls.

I would appreciate any helpful advice in making this conversion.

You need the older style two handle controls easy enough to connect with the right hardware. For steering you need a transom bracket for the cable as there is no tilt tube to put the cable through.

One like this will work just fine you just need to add the clips on the motor and remove the tiller handle.
