Thrust washer ID '77 35hp evinrude

Hello, I hope someone can tell me about the thrust washers on the pinion gear of a '77 35hp evinrude, model 35702C.

Parts diagrams show pinion gear 0322079, with lower thrust washer 0322688, the pinion thrust bearing 0388027, and topped with thrust washer 0319667

My question is the two thrust washers are different sizes , is the large one the lower washer, or the other way around?

The pinion bearing failed on this motor and chowdered up the forward gear and the pinion gear, after disassembly I also discovered it was missing a thrust washer.

I have a parts motor '80 35hp evinrude E35ECSM, it has the same gears, I took it apart, and lost track of the orientation of the pinion thrust washers! Doh!

Also the pinion bearing on the parts motor has damage , oddly enough, though everything else in the gear case looked good.

New pinion bearing and gear case seal kit on the way, but thrust washer question remains , thanks!

As I remember, one has a smaller inner diameter and the other has a larger outer diameter. Smaller inner diameter goes against the pinion gear. Then bearing, then larger outside diameter above that. Reason: The smaller one spins with the gear, larger one is stationary in the case.

Ok thanks . I think I am going to order both new. one was missing, I'm pretty sure now that it got ground to dust along with the carrier for the rollers of the pinion gear bearing, gear oil was loaded with sparkles. The other is worn, I don't know how much, I have nothing to compare it to, but it has a slight ridge around the inner edge. They are expensive, $50 for one. $ 20 for the other, the bearing is only $20!
