Not an engine question but I know some one on this forum will have an answer. I bought a 30 ft. sport fish with twin 318s in the fall of 09 and the starboard shaft where it goes through the thru hull fitting is almost rubbing on the bottom of the fitting the shaft does not have any sloppiness or play in it. It just looks like it was pressed down to the bottom of the thru hull and I don’t think the shaft is bent either. So what do I need to do to fix it? Thanks Jason.

PS: I hope the stringers are rotting out, which would allow the motor/trans to drop."

Jeff… on further inspection of the engine mounts I saw that some one had put a wood shim in-between the mount and the stringers. And with water around all the time the shims began to rot. Which caused for my engine / trans. To drop. The stringers are in really good shape and are not rotted a bit. Is there a reason for the wood shim or can I replace it with a thick piece of plastic for a shim which will not rot. Thanks Jason

"Right, Fred. Wood is a common shim material under mounts for vibration damping, but it should not rot away (doh!) Try some marine plywood.

"Hi Jason I have just been through a similar problem on a Uniflite 31.

If you go through the engine mounts one by one and get them all working then you can start to get them aligned. Some of the mounts had to be replaced as the others were frozen stiff with rust.

The blocks were epoxied to the stringer and lag bolts were used on the mounts and extras on the blocks. Hvae not yet touched up the bruising.

Hi Norm where did you get your mounts. i started searching for some at the local marine stores and on line with no luck the engine mounts that i am finding are either to small or to big. thanks Jason

I gotta disagree about any woo

I gotta disagree about any wood plywood.or any softwood .I have this same problem with the 318s.the shaft is resting on the stern tube and plywood is the cause.Im thinking about a heavy rubber or starboard (which is a cheap cutting board cut on a table saw) or hockey puck!
Thats lookin good Norm wish I had that kind of room to line up the couplers

"Lots of boats have a wooden blocks under the mounts, but I agree that some non-rotting material would be better. Mine is an antique, but the wooden blocks are all in great shape.

Good point on having to free up the mount adjustments before they will move. I had to pull mine off, take them home and wire brush them clean (and anti-seize coat 'em). Moving that huge mass of metal is tough enough with mounts that slide freely!
