I have a 1978 40hp mercury it

I have a 1978 40hp mercury it starts and runs good its just not opening up all the way. It can be full throttle an it will barley move. What do I need to do?

It is reving just fine and its

It is reving just fine and its not missing. It just acts like the throttle is not opening up all the way. It is getting good copmression. But I will clean the jet and check the roating timer base for movement.

Thank you for your help. That was the problem the butterfly was not opening up all the way.

"glad to help, in forward gear the throttle cam at idle should just begin to touch the pickup, if its too close the motor will jump in rpm's when you throw it in gear"
