Throttle response

I have a 1984 140 hp V4 when I took it out recently when I tried to get up to speed all it would do was stay at the same rpm when at full throttle, after about 6 minutes of just going like this it suddenly went full rpm and ran perfectly but when I stopped for a while when I went to get up to speed it did the same thing, I am new to boat engines and am not sure what to look into. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) on each lead.

Have not done a spark gap check. Motor run very smooth. When running on muffs I can manually open throttle and it response immediately. Haven’t tried to manually throttle it up while in gear.

Running on muffs , even in gear it is still neutral !----It will sound good and rev up running on 2 of 4 cylinders.-----Sounds like there may be a loose / poor connection in wiring.----Or a broken wire somewhere.-----Run with a timing light hooked up to see if you can pinpoint the fault.
