Three or four blade prop

"I'm going to buy a new prop,I currently have a three blade prop on my OMC cobra 800 5.0 outdrive. What are the technical differences of a four blade prop (other than the obvious, it has an extra blade, DUH)? Are there performance advantages? Would I need a different pitch? is it better for skiing/towing? Or should I just stay with a three blade one?"

"4 blades give more surface area, blades are the same size as a 3, they are a good cruising prop, a good high speed prop. a 5 blade is a great ski/board prop, the blades are small but you have a lot of surface area and it gains rpm quickly for a good hole shot, it holds a mid/low rpm well for wake boarding, not a good high speed prop or a good fuel prop, you tend to burn more fuel with a 5 then a 3, 4 usually gets best GPH. what are you looking to do? if the blade you have now is alunium, and is working well, drop 2" pitch and try a stainless with the same diameter. just what i have found out playing the prop game through the 90's"
