"Hey Folks,
Just a quick question for the experts.
I blew up a head on my 175 Merc the other day and tore it down to find the usual problems. Head bolts came out fairly well as did the water passage bolts on the outer head cover. Of course when I took the old beast apart the bolts are heavily oxidated from the aluminum/steel combination.
Any recommendations on putting these bolts back in?? I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to assemble with locktite to ensure these bolts stay in place but I'd sure like to coat the heck out of everything with Neverseieze just in case I need to remove in the future and to prevent oxidation.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!"

The bolts should be ok it is the block that oxidized. Run a tap into all the holes to clean out the white stuff to get accurate torque values.Use aviation perfect seal to keep water out.

Do not use anything on the head bolts. It can affect your torque readings.

Don't use Neverseieze on

Don't use Neverseieze on any crucial fastners. They find ways to vibrate out. And cost you your engine. Worry about gettting it apart later.

"Thanks guys, depending on how long this motor lasts, I guess I'll tare it down every 5 years or so anyway to make sure I can still get everything apart. I tend to be a maintanance nut anyway, guess that's why everything I own is old?

The factory doesn't use any Locktite on head bolts?"
