I am looking at a boat that has a 1996 Honda 4-stroke w/ 330 hours. Only problem noted by owner is the choke needs to be manually opened/closed as it no longer can be done remotely. I imgaine it spent most of the time in the salt. Any advice on this engine? I'll probably have it checked out by a mechanic but before that I thought I would float it on this forum to see if it is even worth pursuing. I like the boat - just not sure about this old an engine. Thanks for any input.

"I have a 1996 with over 2500 hours on it. I have had the lower unit rebuilt twice ( I think the first time a seal was put in backwards) and currently have a sticking carb float problem. Otherwise, it has had no problems. I do have the same non working remote choke problem on my 2001 model. I would not hesitate."

"Stan, Honda makes an outstanding motor - almost never hear bad things. Your thinking is correct though, have it looked at and get a professional opinion, you don't want to buy a motor that has been "neglected" - regardless of the original quality, lack of maintenance can turn anything into junk.

At 330 hours, I would personally consider that to be a lightly used motor - at 12 years old, that's what, less than 30 hours a year...."
