This is going to need some prior context before i go into my troubleshooting details
I bought this boat roughly 6-8 months ago give or take and it has barely ran worth a damn and ive been at my wits end trying to work with me, my first trip on the water was OK at best, the morning before i got to the lake I pre ran in on muffs and let it run for a good 10-15 minutes, when i got to the lake it started then died on me in roughly 2-4 minutes before i ever left the Dock. I sat there and played with it for like two hours trying to get it to start then I gave up and took it out of the water and said what if it started on me and go figure it did out of the water, so I put it back in start it and all the sudden its just working awsome. I get my bearing with the wheel and drive it arounf a little before i try to plane out which i did end up getting onto plane and it was great fished for a couple hours and when i go to start it dead in the water, after about 30-40 minutes of toying with it i get it to start but its running like hell and wont plane out of me and sputtering out when I try to make it go faster than 7MPH.
So after that me being mechanically inclined or so i belive, i figure im having some sort of fuel related issue so i rebuild the carbs and inspect the whole system for any leaks i adressed some apparent isssues as the bowls to the carb being warped and order all new bowls and while i was at it just replaced the VRO which the last owner had said he had stopped using and did premix so with very little understanding of how a VRO operates i just decided to replace it also they guy didint bother to unplug it so it was probably stuck in SLOW because of that. Next i had checked the choke solenoid, which by the last owner was left on manual open and had a apparent leak when you pump the primer ball which was strange when i opened it up to rebuild it with the kit I bought i saw the plunger was 1 complety stuck open and also looked like there was a hard glue/plastic like substance that had dried up in the area where fuel and the plunger sits i think it was fuel varnish but I had never seen Varnish look like that before, what i had also noticed was that the platic part of the plunger at the top had competly broken off GREAT. I could not find any sort of reasonably priced replacement for the choke solenoid they were all at around 300+ so after reserching how they work and how theyre built i bought a chinesisum replacement for a different model and stripped it of its internals and used it in mine and it worked just fine, cool that wraps up the fuel system i put it all back together and nothing changed not only that but the cheap igniton key switch quite litteraly fell apart into peices on me GREAT. So after ordering a not OEM key igniton switch off ebay i put it back in and wired it up and started her up on muffs to see how she would idle ( I know this isint a great way to see how its preforming becuase of the lack of load but i live about a hour away from the boat ramp) she idles ok graet even, turns out the shitty key ignition i bought continually sends power to the solenoid keeping it one open two liable to shorting, i found out how liable it is to shorting when i seen the solenoid now smoking and no longer operable and when i turned it off and took it off to inspect it the whole wire going into the elctro magnet just falls out GREAAT. so the solenoid is now stuck on manual forever until i find 300 bucks to replace it and then another 50 to buy a OEM key igniton switch learned my lession.
I take it out on the water to get a proper test out of the engine with load and i wanted to fish bad so i did and when i did that it really fought me at the ramp but i got it to work with me enough to get to my first hole, after i finish fishing that hole the she fought like hell to start and i was getting frustrated so instead of being not dumb i did the dumb thing and kept trying to start it until eventaully i burnt out the motor, trolling motor back to the ramp order the 100$ new starter install it easy just for me to figure out i also burnt the bendix gear on it, that was a whole can of worms to replace and i had to pull the the whole flywheel if youve done this repair you know. After install of my new bendix the engine would turn over and start just very very very much not wanting to stay alive.
it worked but just terrible but i still took it on the water just fighting it every way through and it was OK very pick and choosey when it worked with me and i kind of just put up with it being no faster than 7MPH and not wanting to plane out but this last trip i took about 2-3 weeks ago it actually gave up would not start for nothing after a couple hours of use and i had to troll back home again.
After some reserch and troubleshooting I was inclined to belive that my power pack had taken a **** on me so i took the dive learning to not go cheap on **** and got the CDI brand new part put it in following every step of the instructions and now it still dosnt start and it showing no spark with a spark gap tester I am at my wits end and cannot belive how much this motor has been fighting me and i hate to admit i feel like ive been causeing all these issues with my over confidence in myself to keep this thing alive, I dont know what to do at this point and im looking into buying a stator and possibly a optical sensor.
Any advice would be apperciated as to what i should do moving forward i kind of ranted here sorry for kind of oversharing the outboards whole life story but i mean every step of the way with it has been trouble and felty like a step backwards and all's i want is to have a nice rig to fish off of this is crazy it looked way easier online to get oputboards to work than it is
