"RE: 1995 Evinrude 6.0 (Model: E6SLEOD) 2 problems

Hi - thank you in advance for your help with these 2 questions.

1) The engine runs nicely, but only neutral and reverse operate. When you click into forward, the engine behaves as though still in neutral.

2) Although Reverse seems to work fine, anytime I put it in reverse and give it any throttle, the outboard kicks up out of the water. Isn't there supposed to be a pin or other locking device to hold the motor in position when using reverse? I see a long pin that can be removed and reinserted in one of five sets of holes, but none of them would lock the engine down, the holes seem to be for adjusting trim, I would guess. Is there some feature on the engine that I just don't understand, or that may be broken or missing which would keep that puppy in the water when I engage reverse?!

Thank you in advance to any who can offer help with either of these questions - Mark in CA"

"there should be a lever on the side of the motor by the clamps that holds the motor to the boat. a way to test it with out running the motor (key off) put it in to reverse and try to pick up the motor it shouldnt come up then try it in forward it should come up. sometimes the levers and springs need a little lub and cleaning.
And as far as the lower unit have someone work the controls into F and R and see if its working at the motor, try taking off the shifting cabel and shifting by hand.
sorry to say it sounds like the lower unit is bad"
